Cockermouth has a great selection of dining choices within a 15-minute walk including gastro pubs, Italian bistros, independent coffee shops and fast food. There are some great walks along the river which prove very popular with tourists and locals. Spend the day exploring Wordsworth House, the birthplace of William Wordsworth, then feed the ducks in the memorial gardens. Kirkgate Arts is a great place to visit if you want to take in some performing arts during your holiday. Nestled beneath the castle walls you’ll find the famous Jennings Brewery tour offering tastings and bottled beers to take away. For a more relaxed day, take a swim at the local leisure pool, just under a mile and a half away.
Surrounded on three sides by The Lake District National Park border, you truly get the best of both worlds. Choose between the mountainous scenery of The Lakes or the sandy beaches of the West Cumbrian Coastline. A short car journey takes you to Bassenthwaite Lake, 7 miles, a picturesque lake with a stunning backdrop of the iconic Skiddaw, one of the highest mountains in England offering fantastic walking and cycle routes as well as an osprey viewpoint. Bassenthwaite is also home to The Lake District Wildlife Park and The Lakes Distillery with good food and tasting tours. You’re also only 10 miles from the western coast of Cumbria with sandy beaches and miles of cycle track. The popular town of Keswick is 15 miles away and can be reached by car in about 20 minutes. For walkers and cycling enthusiasts you’ll love Whinlatter Forest Park, or continue down the valley to Buttermere for stunning panoramic scenery. Beach 9 miles. Shop and restaurant 1 mile, pub ½ mile.
