Description

This 18th century cottage retains its original charm and character, with beamed ceilings and feature stone walls. Windy Nook is situated in the heart of the picturesque village of Pooley Bridge, on the north eastern edge of Ullswater, one of the Lake Districts most attractive lakes, at the point where the River Eamont and Ullswater meet. The 16th century bridge over the Eamont gives the village its name and offers beautiful views of the lake and the neighbouring fells. The village and the surrounding area are also of historical interest. Dunmallard Hill, adjacent to the village was the site of an Iron Age Fort and is one of a number of ancient sites dotted around the locality. The village has three good quality pubs which serve food together with tea rooms and a small number of shops providing essentials from groceries and outdoor equipment to souvenirs. The Ullswater steamers also depart from here providing trips along the seven mile lake to Howtown and Glenridding.
The area around the village abounds with stunningly beautiful walks offering a variety of terrain and duration. Visitors can enjoy walks around Ullswater, the second largest lake in the Lake District National Park or through woodland or along the river. The dramatic waterfall, Aira Force, is situated about half way along the lake between Pooley Bridge and Glenridding and for more challenging expeditions the lake is bordered by the mountain ranges of High Street and Helvellyn.
Penrith located at junction 40 of the M6, is approximately five miles from the village and is the nearest town providing access to a railway station, the local hospital as well as banks, shops and supermarkets. The market town of Keswick is also within easy travelling distance at approximately 20 miles from the village.

About the local area

Ullswater is the Lake District's second largest lake at nine miles long. Located in the eastern side of Cumbria, it bends and twists its way through dramatic mountain scenery on one side and a gently curving shoreline of green fields and woodland on the other.

Boating centres and marinas nestle unobtrusively on the lake edge, perfect for the water sports enthusiasts, or visitors can relax and enjoy the scenery from one of the steamers that have sailed the lake since 1855.

Many of the Lake District's many walks have their starting point from around Ullswater, including the renowned trek to Helvellyn's summit via Striding Edge. Or for the less energetic there are many low-level walks through beautiful countryside.

Of note is Glenridding which sits on the south western shore and is surrounded by the fells with wonderful scenic views. Pooley Bridge on the northern shore, with its 16th Century Bridge, Lakeland greystone houses and quaint teashops and Patterdale just to the south of Ullswater, cradled by mountains.
