Luxuriously furnished to provide an elegant holiday base for the northern lakes, this cottage is quietly set in the village of Stainton, just 3 miles from Ullswater. Walking is from the doorstep and the Lakeland Fells are a tempting invitation for the more energetic. The village has a pub, restaurant, farm shop and tea rooms (5-minute walk), with the market town of Penrith 2 miles and Keswick 14 miles for those who wish to browse the quaint shops and tea rooms. Rheged, the Lake District’s biggest visitor attraction has wonderful family entertainment, giant movies and lots more only a mile away. Shop 2 miles, pub and restaurant 100 yards.

About the local area

Ullswater is the Lake District's second largest lake at nine miles long. Located in the eastern side of Cumbria, it bends and twists its way through dramatic mountain scenery on one side and a gently curving shoreline of green fields and woodland on the other.

Boating centres and marinas nestle unobtrusively on the lake edge, perfect for the water sports enthusiasts, or visitors can relax and enjoy the scenery from one of the steamers that have sailed the lake since 1855.

Many of the Lake District's many walks have their starting point from around Ullswater, including the renowned trek to Helvellyn's summit via Striding Edge. Or for the less energetic there are many low-level walks through beautiful countryside.

Of note is Glenridding which sits on the south western shore and is surrounded by the fells with wonderful scenic views. Pooley Bridge on the northern shore, with its 16th Century Bridge, Lakeland greystone houses and quaint teashops and Patterdale just to the south of Ullswater, cradled by mountains.

Lake Ullswater

Ullswater is said by many to be the most beautiful lake in the Lake District. It is the second longest lake in Cumbria measuring a length of seven and a half miles and a width of _ mile.

Rheged

Located just off the M6 J.40 between the northern lakes market town of Penrith and the village of Stainton, Rheged is a surprising building of architectural merit.

Just above Pooley Bridge and easily accessible from the roadside Gowbarrow is south facing and offers some really worthwhile climbs on the middle crag.

Aira Force

On the northern side of the lake, a short walk from the lake shore you can find one of the Lake District's most stunning and famous waterfalls.

Walking up Hallin Fell

To experience one of the best panoramic views of Lake Ullswater, you should hike up Hallin Fell which is situated mid way down the lake and is part of the well known `kink' in the length of the waters.
