Description

Jenkin Hill Lodge is attached to Jenkin Hill House, a charming country house whose origins date back to the 17th century, with later additions in Victorian times. Jenkin Hill is situated in the village of Thornthwaite, set in delightful grounds overlooking the Derwent marshes between Bassenthwaite Lake and Derwentwater with views of the osprey nest and 360 degree views to the surrounding fells. The cottage has a lovely spacious sitting room including window seat on the first floor which takes advantage of the splendid views. The bathroom is fully tiled and the kitchen is a country cottage style. The cottage side garden includes an ideal spot for osprey nest viewing. Thornthwaite has at its centre the Thornthwaite Gallery and St Mary’s church It nestles opposite Skiddaw and beneath Whinlatter and is a comfortable fell walk or short drive away from the Whinlatter visitor centre. The centre offers a car park, shop and restaurant with toilet and baby facilities, and provide easy access to fell walking, mountain biking, forest trails, ’Go Ape’ and children’s adventure playgrounds.

About the local area

Thornthwaite and Braithwaite are situated in between Bassenthwaite Lake and Derwentwater in the Northern Lakes.
These peaceful Lakeland villages are ideally located, with many local places of interest right on the doorstep; lakes, forests, mountains and the delightful market town of Keswick a short distance away. Great for cycling, walking, nature watching and water sports on the nearby lakes.
Whinlatter Forest Park is adjacent and is England’s only true Mountain Forest. From May to September visitors can see wild Bassenthwiate Ospreys raise their young, either at the lake or via video link to the Whinlatter Forest Park Visitor Centre. The park has miles of footpaths and cycle ways and provides a habitat for a wide range of wild life. They also have many organised activities and events throughout the year.
Both villages are within easy reach of all the essential amenities and Keswick is only 2 or 3 miles away. Braithwaite has a village shop and two excellent pubs both serving bar meals.
