Borrowdale and Buttermere in Cumbria

It must be one of the most beautiful landscapes in the British Isles...

The steep sided Borrowdale Valley extends some 10 miles from its source high in the Scafell Mountains down to the shores of Derwentwater in the Northern Lakes and must be one of the most beautiful landscapes in the British Isles.

Derwentwater itself is ringed by road and footpaths both along the shores and at higher levels, and despite its popularity amongst water sports lovers, the lake always stays peaceful. There is a regular launch service around the lake and is an excellent way to explore the lower valley.

To the south beyond the village of Grange with its double arched bridge dating from 1675 and pretty cottages the wooded valley narrows. Here you will find beautiful riverside walks before opening out into rich pasture land with a cross patch of dry stone walls. At the head of the valley there is Rosthwaite, Stonethwaite, Seathwaite and Seatoller, favourites of walkers and climbers who venture into the dramatic hills and mountains that encircle this area.

Situated alongside the lake from which it takes its name, the village of Buttermere enjoys some of the most dramatic and beautiful scenery afforded to the Lake District and is the ideal spot for a tranquil Cumbrian cottage getaway. Buttermere is the most southerly of its nearby sister lakes, Crummock Water and Loweswater. Encircling all three lakes are impressively high fells, over which lies 'Wild Ennerdale', where the National Trust is currently working to encourage wildlife and wilder landscape to flourish. Equidistant between lakes Buttermere and Crummock and a mere 20 minute drive to the shore of Derwentwater, visitors to Buttermere village will also enjoy access to an exciting array of water sports pursuits including canoeing, kayaking, sailing, surfing and windsurfing. Also a mere half hour's drive from the bustling town of Keswick, visitors will be able to take advantage of the many boutique shops, pubs and eateries available at the historic town. With close connections to the likes of Beatrix Potter and William Wordsworth, the town's Museum and Art Gallery will also provide the perfect excursion for those interested in the history literature alike. Keswick is also home to the Pencil Museum, the Cars of the Stars Museum the Keswick Mining Museum, the Viridian Galleries and The Puzzling Place, among countless other attractions, so there really is something here for everyone.
