Description

This charming, semi-detached, former farmhouse dates back to 1750 and has been well-furnished to give a homely and comfortable stay. As you open the door you enter a spacious and very well-equipped kitchen, having a full-sized fridge/freezer, washing machine and all the equipment you need to create some lovely meals. If cooking is not your thing there is a pub/restaurant just a few hundred metres up the road, or a popular village inn with an excellent reputation just a mile away, as well as many other deserving pubs nearby.

Downstairs you will find two good sized bedrooms and two bathrooms. One bedroom has a double bed and one has twin beds. The en-suite bathroom to the double room has a bath and shower over, and there is a double-sized shower in the other bathroom, all important for a lovely hot shower or soak after a day on the fells.

So why are the bedrooms downstairs? Well as you go into the upstairs living room you will realise the answer to this when you gaze out of the window at the stunning vista of Skiddaw and Ullock Pike in all their colourful moods. Could this be what draws you away from the large TV or your various phones/tablets (we have good Wi-Fi too!)?

Outside you have a fully enclosed garden to relax in with a cup of tea after a day on the fells or swimming in the lake, or seeing the many attractions. This is laid to lawn with flower borders and there is a garden table and chairs plus further deck chairs in the shed. If you have bikes you are welcome to store them in our locked garage.

The cottage is in a peaceful location, down a private drive away from the main road. From here you can walk across the fields to the lake (approximately 2 miles). There are some lovely swimming spots in Bassenthwaite, whether you walk, drive or cycle to it, so don’t forget your swimming costume! For other entertainment there are many Wainwrights to bag in the surrounding area, or for the less energetic the Lake District Wildlife Park is less than a mile away, a great family day out. Or you may feel the distillery is more your thing and this is also nearby.
The cottage is approximately 6 miles from Cockermouth and the same from Keswick (about 15 minutes drive). Both towns have supermarkets for that essential food shop. In Keswick you can visit The Pencil Museum, The Theatre by the Lake, The Alhambra Cinema or hire a boat on Derwentwater. So much choice!

Finally a real bonus to this cottage is the warm welcome from the owners who live next door and are happy to give any help needed or advice about walks nearby. Shop 6 miles, pub and restaurant 100 yards.

About the local area

Bassenthwaite Lake and village of the same name is situated just north west of Keswick in the Northern Lakes. The magnificent Skiddaw (931m) can be seen rising to the east and Grisedale Pike (790m) to the south west.

Paths leading from Bassenthwaite village connect to circular walks in the area and holidaymakers are able to go fishing and sailing on the lake. From May to September look out for the wild Bassenthwaite Lake Ospreys raising their young chicks or watch the video link from Whinlatter Forest Visitor's Centre. Try a visit to the historic 17th century manor house, Mirehouse, which is close by on the eastern shore of the lake and has some lovely garden walks (Open April - October) or travel a few miles west to market town of Cockermouth or just a little further to Maryport on the coast.

This area offers the ideal base for exploring nearby Keswick; a charming Northern Lakes market town of great character and is well placed for touring the untouched northern and western lakes.
