Lowther Castle is situated near Penrith, on the northern edge of the Lake District National Park. The castle ruins are scattered around the 130 acres of rural gardens with the main castle ruins situated in the heart of the grounds with its missing roof. Restoration started in 2010 to stabilise the castle to tell the story of its history and of those people who worked there throughout the years.
Walks have been popular in the estate for more than 200 years, with WilliamI Earl of Lonsdale opening his land for walks along the banks of River Lowther.
New for 2018 - cycle-hire! A network of trails that runs through the Lowther Estate have been created. These trails embrace all that is beautiful in our lovely Lowther valley. There are cycle paths and footpaths, and cyclists, walkers, dogs and their owners are all welcome.
