The most iconic attraction and the draw for millions of visitors each year is the largest and longest lake in England, Windermere. Stand on the pebbles on the shore, looking out across the lake to the Langdale Fells or you can hire a rowing boat and enjoy water sports on the lake. Why not sit back and take a cruise on the traditional Victorian steamers. You can sail to various destinations including Waterhead at Ambleside, or down to Lakeside and join the Lakeside to Haverthwaite Steam Railway to continue your steam powered journey.
Lakeside is home to The Aquarium of the Lakes, fun for all the family, or pick up the shuttle bus to the Lakeland Motor Museum for a trip back in time. For more family fun, The World of Beatrix Potter attraction can be found in Bowness. If you prefer more adrenaline-filled activity, why not try Go-Ape, a high wire treetop adventure and zip-wire course set in the forest at Grizedale. This can be accessed via the traditional car ferry from Windermere to Hawkshead, or if you want to get off the beaten track, you can head into the hills in Land Rovers for an off road 4 x 4 experience.
Whether you want peaceful walks, rugged climbs or picturesque scenery, this part of the Lakes has it all, from low level walking and cycling routes including lakes, waterfalls and caves to some of the most challenging terrain around, including access to many of the 214 Wainwright Fells within easy reach. You are only a short drive to Kendal, Ambleside, Coniston, Hawkshead, Grasmere and Ulverston. Beach 15 miles. Shop 0.6 miles, pub 0.3 miles and restaurant ½ mile.
