Set back from the main road, Thornbarrow Cottages offer a quiet retreat from the vibrant town centre of Bowness-on-Windermere, yet only a 10-minute walk will bring you to everything this fantastic town has to offer, from themed bars and restaurants, cafés and coffee shops to delightful delis and bakeries. There is an abundance of shopping experiences including outdoor wear, fashion and boutiques. A 15-minute walk in the other direction brings you to the town centre of Windermere with its own selection of shops, bars, restaurants and supermarkets.

The most iconic attraction and the draw for millions of visitors each year is the largest and longest lake in England, Windermere. Stand on the pebbles on the shore, looking out across the lake to the Langdale Fells or you can hire a rowing boat and enjoy water sports on the lake. Why not sit back and take a cruise on the traditional Victorian steamers. You can sail to various destinations including Waterhead at Ambleside, or down to Lakeside and join the Lakeside to Haverthwaite Steam Railway to continue your steam powered journey.

Lakeside is home to The Aquarium of the Lakes, fun for all the family, or pick up the shuttle bus to the Lakeland Motor Museum for a trip back in time. For more family fun, The World of Beatrix Potter attraction can be found in Bowness. If you prefer more adrenaline-filled activity, why not try Go-Ape, a high wire treetop adventure and zip-wire course set in the forest at Grizedale. This can be accessed via the traditional car ferry from Windermere to Hawkshead, or if you want to get off the beaten track, you can head into the hills in Land Rovers for an off road 4 x 4 experience.

Whether you want peaceful walks, rugged climbs or picturesque scenery, this part of the Lakes has it all, from low level walking and cycling routes including lakes, waterfalls and caves to some of the most challenging terrain around, including access to many of the 214 Wainwright Fells within easy reach. About the local area

Lake Windermere is perhaps the best know area in the Lake District and Windermere village itself is about 1km from the lake. The lake stretches from Waterhead, near Ambleside, to Lakeside at its narrow southern end, over 10 miles in length and the largest lake in England. Wooded slopes dotted with cottages and houses line its shores, while the water itself is usually busy with ferries and yachts.

Windermere is not as busy as it's near neighbour, Bowness-on-Windermere, but has its own charms and attractions. It has excellent amenities and a good selection of shops, restaurants and bars all within easy reach. The village has good public transport links with its own train station and bus routes.

Troutbeck Bridge lies to the north in between Windermere and Ambleside; handy for both but located just off the beaten track. Troutbeck Bridge has its own local amenities including a public swimming pool and a local pub. Between Troutbeck Bridge and the Low Wood Hotel lies Brockhole - The Lake District Visitor Centre. This has an adventure playground, exhibitions, cafe, shop and extensive grounds down to the lake and jetty.

Situated between Kendal and Windermere is the lovely village of Staveley which is often referred to as the Gateway to the Lakes. It mainly comprises of grey slate buildings which are nestled between the Rivers Kent and Gowan. It is ideally placed for exploring the rest of the Lake District and is only a few minutes away from the beautiful Kentmere valley.
