Only six miles from Kirkby Lonsdale and within a 15 minute drive of the Lake District National Park, Old Hutton is a pretty, rural village well,placed for touring two of England’s most beautiful countries. The surrounding countryside is ideal for hikers and bikers and with excellent shopping and restaurants in both Kendal and Kirkby Lonsdale, there really is something to please every member of your party.
Swallow Barn is a substantial conversion, ideal for reuniting large family groups or for a gathering of keen walkers and friends. The accommodation offers affordable comfort, with much use of solid pine throughout, the spacious kitchen/dining room linked directly to the lounge just the spot to enjoy an informal meal. The orchard garden, with lawn area and river beside, just across the courtyard from the house, is the perfect place to dine ’al fresco’ when the weather permits.

About the local area

Situated to the South of the Lake District, and only a short drive from the sea, Kendal is especially well placed to cater for everyone's holiday needs. Kendal is often seen as the Southern gateway to the Lake District, being only around nine miles from Windermere and around 30 miles from Keswick.

The other lakes are all within an hour or two's travelling by car from the town, as are locations for walks and rambles, both gentle and demanding. The town is home to a fine selection of shopping arcades, can boast two castles, two museums, a host of historical buildings and bridges, fine restaurants, a multitude of public houses, and views that would please the most demanding photographer including the nearby ruin of Kendal Castle.

The pleasant Lakeland village of Underbarrow lies to the west of the town of Kendal and sits at the foot of Helsington Barrow, a limestone ridge rising to around 700 feet. Underbarrow stands at the centre of a network of roads linking Kendal to Crosthwaite in the Lyth Valley, Newby Bridge and Ulverston and the village of Crook to Levens making it idea to explore all the surrounding areas with ease.

Further west is the small village of Crosthwaite which is an ideal point from which to explore the Windermere and South Lakes area and, with walks right from the door, it will please keen walkers and hikers.
