This former station waiting room, though still a period timbered Furness railway structure, was converted into a dwelling house in the 1930s and now with sympathetic internal modernisation and the addition of an extension incorporating a private balcony, the former waiting room is now the perfect retreat for a holiday. The station is a stop on the scenic Cumbrian Coast Line south-west of Carlisle, and dates back to 1849, when steam engines first whistled along the lines. Located in the centre of the village with all the local amenities close by, this is often the start for many walking enthusiasts beginning the Coast to Coast walk. The village is just south of St Bees Head which is the most westerly point of Cumbria and only 50 miles from the Scottish border. The Georgian town of Whitehaven is five miles to the north and is known as one of the 40 Gem Towns of England. Just 15 miles south, Ravenglass is a quiet, coastal village with picturesque coastal walks. The Ravenglass and Eskdale Steam Railway is a 15 inch narrow gauge heritage track and the seven mile line runs from Ravenglass to Dalegarth Station near Boot, in the Valley of Eskdale, in the Lake District. There is also fun for all the family at the historic, haunted Muncaster Castle which is close to Ravenglass, boasting Himalayan gardens, hawk and owl centre, playgrounds, café and gift shops.
