Head south down the A595 from Bootle to discover the peaceful coastal village of Silecroft. Once here, you'll find a vast cobblestone and sand beach spanning some five miles that serves as a prime location for a range of outdoor activities, with horse riding chief among them. The Murthwaite Green Trekking Centre, which is based in Silecroft, specialises in offering beach-riding experiences for every family member and there's surely no better way to see the wonderful Cumbrian coastline than while taking a gallop in the surf. For an alternative view of the surrounding areas, venture up Black Combe fell, which is easily accessible on foot if you fancy staying over in one of the charismatic Silecroft cottages. Black Combe also overlooks Silecroft golf course. This nine-hole course, which has 18 tees if you fancy doing a full round, is situated right on the coastline, meaning it offers challenging weather conditions for golfers of all abilities. Three miles from Silecroft is Millom, a small town on the border of the Lake District National Park that has a theatre and bountiful supply of pubs, restaurants and shops. Hodbarrow and Millom Ironworks are two nature reserves that are also nearby and more than 270 species of plant lift grow on the former mining site.
