Near the west coast of Cumbria and three miles inland from the seaside resort of Seascale is the village of Gosforth. With Scafell Pike and Wastwater, the highest mountain and deepest lake in England respectively, both just a short distance away, it really is a gateway to some of the Lake District's geographical gems. The Eskdale and Wasdale valleys are also in close proximity, allowing anyone who sets up a home from home in one of the Cumbrian cottages near to Gorsforth unrivalled access to some of the most magnificent landscape in the entire country. In the middle of Gorsforth itself is a square with a handful of convenience and craft shops, as well as several pubs. One of the specialist shops sells pottery and also runs courses for anyone interested in all things ceramic. Every August, an agricultural show is held on the edge of the village, which includes everything from show jumping to terrier racing. All manner of locally-produced arts and craft and food and drink also enjoy their moment in the spotlight. St Mary's Church in Gorsforth is notable for the fact it has the oldest and tallest Viking cross in England within its ground, which stands at some 14ft high.
