Mill Cottage is situated within the grounds of Nenthead Mines Heritage Centre, a scheduled ancient monument which is owned by the North Pennines Heritage Trust, a registered charity. The Mine is 1400 feet above sea level in an 'Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty' in the Pennine Hills, close to Alston and the border with Northumberland. Guests are entitled to free mine tours (open Easter to end of October) and can roam free on this 200 acre site, with fell and woodland walks ,a lake and a dam. The site produces its own electricity from a hydro power station which also feeds into the national grid. There is a shop and cafe on site which is open in season and Nenthead has a community shop and a pub serving meals, with more amenities 5 miles away in Alston. During its 350 year history lead, sliver and zinc were all mined here at England's highest lead mine. Visitors can pan for minerals like a prospector of years gone by, control huge waterwheel's and go underground to see the authentic mine workings. Further info at:- www.npht.com/nentheadmines
