Description

This excellent character cottage is situated on the fringe of the Lake District National Park, in the peaceful village of Sockbridge. Ideally located for exploring the northern Lakes and fells, just two and a half miles from Ullswater and 15 miles from Keswick. This holiday property is light, warm and spacious, and retains many original features, with open views across fields to the Pennines. Directly from the cottage there are several pleasant walks to be enjoyed along public footpaths, across the fields and along the river. Nearby is a children’s play area and a little further on is the village pub and shop, all within walking distance of the cottage. Visit the market town of Penrith, with its variety of shopping facilities, Lowther castle and Gardens, or pack a picnic and head off to Askham outdoor heated pool all located only three miles from the cottage. In 1745 Sockbridge and Sockbridge House were raided by a detachment of Charles Edward Stuart’s army when they invaded England. Two of his cannon balls, found alongside the Sockbridge Mill, are on display in Carlisle Castle museum. About the local area

Ullswater is the Lake District's second largest lake at nine miles long. Located in the eastern side of Cumbria, it bends and twists its way through dramatic mountain scenery on one side and a gently curving shoreline of green fields and woodland on the other.

Boating centres and marinas nestle unobtrusively on the lake edge, perfect for the water sports enthusiasts, or visitors can relax and enjoy the scenery from one of the steamers that have sailed the lake since 1855.

Many of the Lake District's many walks have their starting point from around Ullswater, including the renowned trek to Helvellyn's summit via Striding Edge. Or for the less energetic there are many low-level walks through beautiful countryside.

Of note is Glenridding which sits on the south western shore and is surrounded by the fells with wonderful scenic views. Pooley Bridge on the northern shore, with its 16th Century Bridge, Lakeland greystone houses and quaint teashops and Patterdale just to the south of Ullswater, cradled by mountains.
