Description

In an idyllic secluded location with stunning, uninterrupted views over the fells to the Vale of Lorton, Woodlands House adjoins The Spinney (ref LUV) and has been created from a beautiful detached house, built in 1822 as a ‘painting house’ and studio for Joseph Sutton, a noted local artist. They are set in 1¾ acres of mature wooded gardens (with grassed areas, ideal for ball games) which lead down to the River Cocker where fishing is available by local licence. This is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and a haven to an abundance of wildlife. Just a short drive away is the bustling Georgian market town of Cockermouth (4 miles), the birthplace of William Wordsworth whose poetry helped make the Lake District so well known.
The property is situated in the hamlet of Rogerscale, just 8 miles (via the Whinlatter Pass) from Keswick, the Northern ’capital’ of the Lakes, making this an ideal base from which to explore both the northern Lakes and the west coast. The area offers stunning scenery, with Loweswater, Crummock Water and Buttermere within 15 minutes’ drive. Easily reached are Derwent Water (with steamers) and Bassenthwaite (with sailing and canoeing), while the Whinlatter Forest Centre offers extensive walking and cycling trails. Riding and golf 5 miles. Lorton 1 mile. Coast 20 miles. Shops 4½ miles, pub 1 mile.
Note: Although completely self contained, these two properties can be interconnected via an internal door to provide accommodation for up to 11 people. Over the Xmas and New Year period ref LUU (Woodlands House) and ref LUV (The Spinney) must be booked together or ref LUU alone.

About the local area

Thornthwaite and Braithwaite are situated in between Bassenthwaite Lake and Derwentwater in the Northern Lakes. These peaceful Lakeland villages are ideally located, with many local places of interest right on the doorstep.

These peaceful Lakeland villages are ideally located, with many local places of interest right on the doorstep; lakes, forests, mountains and the delightful market town of Keswick a short distance away. Great for cycling, walking, nature watching and water sports on the nearby lakes.

Whinlatter Forest Park is adjacent and is England's only true Mountain Forest. From May to September visitors can see wild Bassenthwaite Ospreys raise their young, either at the lake or via video link to the Forest Park Visitor Centre. The park has miles of footpaths and cycle ways and provides a habitat for a wide range of wild life. They also have many organised activities and events throughout the year.

Both villages are within easy reach of all the essential amenities and Keswick is only 2 or 3 miles away. Braithwaite has a village shop and two excellent pubs both serving bar meals.
