The glacial formed lake of Bassenthwaite which once was linked to Derwentwater many years ago, is the only water form in the Lake District which is named a ‘lake’ as the others are ‘waters’, ‘meres’ and ‘tarns’.

Situated on the outskirts of Bassenthwaite Lake, this brilliant animal attraction is a great day out for all no matter what your age!

The idyllic setting is one of the most photographed viewpoints in the Lake District, with an amazing view over the lake of Derwentwater towards Keswick and the surrounding fells.

South of Keswick you can find the stunning valley of Borrowdale where you will discover the three valleys known as Watendlath, Stonethwaite and Seathwaite.

Located in the Borrowdale valley near the Grange village is a 2000 ton boulder. It is most unusually placed, balanced on a strange angle.

First recordings of mining at the Honister Slate Mine dates back to the 1700’s, but it is believed it may have started in the Roman or even Pre-Historic era.

The beautiful lake of Derwentwater is located in the north of the Lake District, and is surrounded by magnificent fells, the Borrowdale Valley and Keswick.

On the outskirts of Keswick is the grand historic home known as Mirehouse built in 1666 by The Earl of Derby.

If you travel through the Vale of Lorton you will reach beautiful Crummock Water which is then linked to Buttermere by a small beck. These two lakes are ideally located in the heavenly north lakes.

Whinlatter Forest Park can be found up the Whinlatter Pass past Braithwaite. This is a brilliant place to get spectacular views over the Lake District and into Scotland.

Just five miles from Keswick, you can find the stunning glacial valley which is known as St John’s in the Vale. This amazing scenic location is home to several small settlements and farms.

A popular place to visit in the Borrowdale Valley is the Lodore Falls, a waterfall which is formed by the Watendath Beck and is located near the southern end of Derwentwater.

Next to Bassenthwaite Lake is St Bega Church which is the parish church of Bassenthwaite. Services have been going on here at this ancient location for over a thousand years.
