Description

Croft Cottage is a detached property, set in its own gardens in the tiny hamlet of Little Town. The hamlet only has eight houses including a working hill farm and the cottage itself is an excellent barn conversion, dating back several hundred years. Its location in a peaceful rural community contrasts with Keswick’s bustling activity with its shops, markets, museums, theatre and cinema only a short drive away.
The cottage is equipped to the highest level with all the comforts you would expect in your own home. The spacious beamed lounge with its cosy wood burning stove has a picture window giving magnificent views up tot he top of Catbells, one of the Lake District’s most popular fells. In fact there are truly stunning views all round and you can walk from the doorstep onto the fells that form the Newlands Round or alternatively enjoy relaxing low level walks in the Valley or by the lakeshore.
Quotes from our guests "Your cottage is by far the best we have ever stayed in in the UK – extremely clean, comfy and complete with all the facilities you could wish for. The scenery is spectacular and the ambience is something special "We’ve been visiting the Lakes as a group of friends at Whitsun for over 30 years and this has been the best week for accommodation so far!  We especially appreciated the comfort, taste and care shown in preparing the cottage - and not least the superbly laid out garden."

About the local area

Keswick is overlooked by spectacular scenery including the towering Skiddaw and Lonscale Fell to the north and Derwentwater a stones throw away to the south, in the heart of the Northern Lakes.

The market town gained its original charter in 1276 and although small it now forms the hub of the Northern Lake District. Keswick has great character with its well tended appearance (Winning several national awards); two large parks close to the town centre, speciality, gift and outdoor shops and a range of outdoor and indoor attractions.

Close by is the 4000 year old Castlerigg Stone Circle and the shores of Derwentwater are a mere stroll away past the Theatre by the Lake. During the summer months visitors can enjoy a free minibus service run by the National Trust from Keswick linking into round trips to Buttermere.

Keswick is a great base for a holiday in the Lake District with plenty of facilities close at hand but in the midst of beautiful north Lakeland countryside.

Portinscale at the foot of Derwentwater is neatly sandwiched between Keswick, only a mile away to the east, Bassenthwaite Lake just to the north and Whinlatter Forest Park to the west. All the essentials including a local pub serving bar meals, a restaurant, a tea room and plenty of parking spaces can be found in the village.

There are two marinas on Derwentwater where sailing, windsurfing and canoeing are offered, either for instruction or hire and there is also a jetty where you can catch the motor launch that circuits the lake.

The beautiful Newlands Valley, one of the Lake Districts best kept secrets, is a few minutes walk away. This lush green valley has many opportunities for keen walkers with a great choice of gentle river strolls or more challenging all day hikes! The circuit of the Newlands Valley is one of the best ridge walks in the Lake District. The ever changing scenery and the many interesting sights along the way make this one of Wainwrights most famous and enjoyable walks. Newlands was once a favorite with Beatrix Potter. Here she set the scene for some of her well loved children's classics such as 'The Tale of Mrs Tiggywinkle'. Sketches of Catbells, Skelgill and Little Town all feature in the novel. The Valley also has a great local pub, The Swinside Inn and an award winning restaurant Swinside Lodge.

This area is ideally located for mountain biking and cycling, the C2C cycle route passes through Portinscale and if you've forgotten your bicycle don't worry; there are a number of bicycle hire shops in nearby Keswick. For the walkers the nearby fells of Catbells, Maiden Moor, Knott Rigg and Causey Pike and beckon.
