Hidden behind Skiddaw awayfrom the busier part of the Lake District, is the beautiful village of Caldbeck. This traditional fell village has been here since the 17th Century due to industrial development, one of these industries was mining for minerals in the surrounding fells. The river that runs through the village was used to run the brewery and all the mills, the buildings are still there at present adding brilliant character to the village. Fell farming is now the most important industry in this area. The character is kept just like it was many years ago with farm animals such as ponies and ducks roaming free around the village.
Watermill Cafe is a brilliant place to stop for some food, it is a converted watermill situated on the riverside. All the food is locally produced; organic wherever possible and home-cooked to give the dishes that personal touch. In the summeryou can sit outside on the terrace peacefully with the river flowing alongside or in the winter head inside to eat in the warmth next to the cosy log stove.
