This idyllic setting is one of the most photographed viewpoints in the Lake District, with an amazing view over the lake of Derwentwater towards Keswick and the surrounding fells. The traditional stone packhorse bridge goes across Barrow Beck allowing a narrow road to carry on weaving up the hill. A car park can be found just past the bridge at the start of Ashness Wood; here you can take a short walk further up the hill to a spectacular waterfall on Ashness Gill or to have a look at `Surprise View'.
Rare red squirrels can be spotted on the way up through Ashness Wood, a great highlight of the walk. At the top you will reach a cliff edge point known as Surprise View, here you are met with stunning views of the surrounding areas such as Derwentwater, Skiddaw and some of the Borrowdale Valley. On a clear day you can see all the way north to Bassenthwaite Lake. A fantastic view!
