Many of the rivers here are well stocked with sea trout, brown trout and salmon. Excellent coarse fishing can also be found in the larger lakes.
It’s useful to note that in many places fishing permits will be required. Day or weekly permits can be obtained from local angling associations. But at Windermere, Ullswater and Coniston Water permits are not needed.
Windermere is the obvious draw for many anglers. It is the largest lake in England and with the backdrop of mountains and the facilities of Bowness and Windermere close by it’s the perfect spot for fishing whilst on holiday.
Bassenthwaite Lake is also a popular venue for fishing with much of the lake having fine views of Skiddaw and the opportunity to spot ospreys in season.
For a quieter location head to Buttermere where the best fishing can be enjoyed in June and where there is no shortage of peaceful shoreline to choose from. But if that’s not enough to tempt you head for the Fish Inn on the lake shore which serves freshly caught fish and great pub meals.

Ullswater is the second largest lake in Cumbria and is surrounded by the most varied of landscapes.
Windermere is the largest Lake in England making it a great choice for those wanting to spend much of their holiday fishing.
Buttermere is located in the Buttermere Valley and sits alongside Crummock Water and Loweswater.
Bassenthwaite Lake is four miles long and lies at the foot of the steep slopes of Skiddaw.
