To the west, a mile away, is Lowther Castle (featured on the Antiques Roadshow) and the beautiful villages of Askham and Pooley Bridge. Ullswater offers various attractions including a trip on the lake on the old steamer, and some of Wainwright’s favourite fells including High Street, Place Fell and Helvellyn are all within easy reach. To the east there are peaceful country lanes for cycling and walking and beyond Appleby, the Pennine Hills. There are good opportunities nearby for horse riding, golf, sailing, canoeing, fishing, quad biking and clay pigeon shooting. Penrith is six miles to the north and has excellent shopping choices with supermarkets as well as an excellent local produce delicatessen, many arts and crafts shops, a cinema and a number of restaurants. There is a host of good pubs and restaurants close by. Within a mile are two village pubs serving food. Others nearby have gained reputations for quality food and service. The Old Mill offers a perfect, relaxing, holiday base in a beautiful valley from which to explore and enjoy the wonders of the area.
