Description

Hayton Castle is the main property on Edmond Castle Estate and is a family home as it was for most of its history, with occasional changes of use during the 20th century. The current owners have refurbished some of the estates properties into luxurious self-catering accommodation which will appeal to the most discerning guests, allowing the opportunity to stay on this historical sight, close to Hadrian’s Wall. Whatever your party size there is a cottage to suit, with properties sleeping anything from 4 – 10 guests. The Peele Tower is the oldest building on the estate, dating to around 1603, when in the hands of the Howard family, the castle was designed by the renowned architect Sir Robert Smirke and built between 1824 and 1829. Each ‘cottage’ is superbly equipped and luxuriously furnished to ensure a relaxing stay. There is a small lake in the grounds with an abundance of birdlife and footpaths to the surrounding countryside. Edmond Castle is situated 7 miles east of the Historic city of Carlisle, outside the village of Hayton and is ideally situated to visit the Scottish Borders, the Eden Valley, the Lake District and Hadrian’s Wall. There is a golf course nearby, fishing on the River Eden, good restaurants locally and a great shopping centre in Carlisle.
Lake View has really got the ’Wow’ factor with spacious and beautifully furnished rooms coordinated linens, stunning kitchen, luxurious bathrooms and a rear garden overlooking the lake.. Guests with mobility problems will appreciate the ground floor bedroom and bathroom. Shop, pub and restaurant 2½ miles.

About the local area

Carlisle's modern city centre has a rich heritage; a wonderful combination of culture, history and the great outdoors. It is surrounded by acres of parkland and has some of our finest countryside right on the doorstep.

This great border city has had a turbulent past, leaving a legacy for today's visitors to experience. Carlisle Castle was founded in 1092 by William the Conqueror's son and became one time prison to Mary Queen of Scots. Later it was captured by Bonnie Prince Charlie during the ill fated Jacobite rebellion of 1745. Other places to visit include Carlisle Cathedral and the award winning Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery.

Nearly 2000 years ago Emporer Hadrian built Hadrian's Wall, stretching coast to coast, marking the northern boundary of Roman Britain. Today it is a World Heritage Site with a National Trail Path that allows walkers to travel along its entire 80 mile length; a great way to discover more about the region.

So if you're looking for secluded country walks, city art galleries, forts and museums, Stately Homes and castles, you'll find it all here!
