Description

Gill Cottage lies in a rural location in the village of Crosby Garrett which is now part of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. The village is famous for the Roman helmet that was found on land above the house, and was sold for over two million pounds at auction in London! Gill Cottage is ideal for families or couples who wish to enjoy a holiday in the Eden Valley with the Lake District National Park within easy reach. The cottage lies on the edge of the quiet farming village and has rural views from every window. There is a small village shop and post-office, but with Kirkby Stephen just 4 miles away, there is a good choice of local shops, pubs and restaurants to visit. The quaint town of Kirkby Londsdale is further afield at around 37 miles, and has its own attractions including Devil’s Bridge and Ruskin’s View. The market towns of Penrith and Kendal with their castle ruins, are both 20 miles away, and Carlisle with its castle and Tullie House Museum is 50 miles. Another castle can be found at Appleby-in-Westmorland. Penrith is also home to the Rheged Centre with something for all the family. Chocoholics will love the Chocolate Factory in Orton, whilst Hawes is home to the Wensleydale Cheese Factory, made famous by the TV characters ’Wallace and Gromit’. Nearby attractions include the Settle to Carlisle railway line linking Carlisle and Leeds. Occasionally, steam trains can be seen crossing the Crosby Garrett Viaduct from the front of the property. There are walks straight from the door and quiet country lanes making it a fantastic location for cyclists and walkers alike. For nature lovers, Smardale Nature Reserve and Sunbiggin Tarn are a short distance away, whilst the tourist towns of Windermere, Keswick and Pooley Bridge are all within 45 minutes. On the generally uncongested roads, greater distances can be travelled to places in less time. Small village shop 550 yards, pub and restaurant 4 miles.

About the local area

Kirkby Stephen at the head of the Eden Valley is a popular centre for walkers and is situated on the Cumbria Cycle Way - a great route for all keen cyclists. Kirkby Stephen is just over an hour from Silverdale - an Area of Outstanding Beauty, offering a truly inspiring escape from the pace and pressures of everyday life. Don’t miss the headland of Jack Scout leading to Jenny Brown’s Point. From here, look out across the bay to see Humphrey Head where, so legend has it, the last wolf in England was slain.
Kirkby Lonsdale is in Cumbria’s south east in between the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales; an historic market town in an area of great natural beauty with riverside and country walks. There are many riverside and country walks in the area, and historic buildings to see in the town itself, including the 11th century Norman parish church. While some market towns have become spoilt over the years, Kirkby Lonsdale and its surrounding area of outstanding landscape still retain the same beauty appreciated by Constable, Turner, and Ruskin.
