Description

A delightful detached cottage in a small courtyard setting, The Stables offers couples, small families and friends a peaceful retreat away from the crowds, but is within easy access of the Lakes and Dales. With an Aga taking pride of place in the kitchen (providing heat and for cooking, try the bottom oven for easy casseroles to come back to after a days walking!), the downstairs has a very much ‘cottagey’ feel and is a pretty, homely setting, perfect for two or three guests. Climb the stairs to the living room, a fabulous space open to the eaves with comfortable sofas, an antique refectory table and an easy to use, gas wood burner. A good sized garden is tucked away to the rear of the property, and the garage is available for bike storage.
Keen cyclists will enjoy the excellent routes direct from the door, whilst walkers will find The Dales Way and picturesque local walks for all abilities nearby. A short drive will take you into the popular, historic market town of Kendal, which is set on the River Kent and has independent retailers, cafés, restaurants and high street stores. Days out to much loved places include Sedbergh, Hawes, Bowness and Windermere, whilst Morecambe Bay and South Lakeland are also within easy reach. Shop and pub 2½ miles, restaurant 3 miles.

About the local area

Situated to the South of the Lake District, and only a short drive from the sea, Kendal is especially well placed to cater for everyone's holiday needs. Kendal is often seen as the Southern gateway to the Lake District, being only around nine miles from Windermere and around 30 miles from Keswick.

The other lakes are all within an hour or two's travelling by car from the town, as are locations for walks and rambles, both gentle and demanding. The town is home to a fine selection of shopping arcades, can boast two castles, two museums, a host of historical buildings and bridges, fine restaurants, a multitude of public houses, and views that would please the most demanding photographer including the nearby ruin of Kendal Castle.

The pleasant Lakeland village of Underbarrow lies to the west of the town of Kendal and sits at the foot of Helsington Barrow, a limestone ridge rising to around 700 feet. Underbarrow stands at the centre of a network of roads linking Kendal to Crosthwaite in the Lyth Valley, Newby Bridge and Ulverston and the village of Crook to Levens making it idea to explore all the surrounding areas with ease.

Further west is the small village of Crosthwaite which is an ideal point from which to explore the Windermere and South Lakes area and, with walks right from the door, it will please keen walkers and hikers.
