Description

Nestled in an area of outstanding beauty, close to Kendal and Windermere, Hawes Bank is the ideal base for exploring the Lake District, whatever your ambitions. With many of Wainwright's classic walks and some excellent gastropubs within easy reach, it is easy to see why our guests come back. After a bracing day on the fells or a lovely stroll along the nearby River Kent, Hawes Bank is the ideal house to come home to; kick off your boots in the boot room and then relax in front of an open fire in the lounge or library before enjoying a convivial meal in the large, well equipped kitchen.

Hawes Bank is an 1840's gentleman's residence lovingly restored by it's owners. With the emphasis on period detail many of the furnishings have been handmade locally by craftsmen. Downstairs rooms are light and airy with original stone and wood floors. Upstairs there are four large and stylish bedrooms, all with gorgeous views. The bathroom with sumptuous roll top bath is just the place to unwind, while the power shower in the second bathroom has drawn rave reviews from exhilarated guests.

Despite it's peaceful location, communication links are excellent with the M6 just 10 minutes drive and Oxenholme station, on the main London to Glasgow fast train line, a mere five minutes away. There are plenty of fishing, horseriding and cycling opportunities in the area.

With a large garden, parking for up to five cars and flexible, quality accommodation, Hawes Bank is truly a holiday property of distinction and will be long remembered by it's guests:

About the local area

Situated to the South of the Lake District, and only a short drive from the sea, Kendal is especially well placed to cater for everyone’s holiday needs. Kendal is often seen as the Southern gateway to the Lake District, being only around nine miles from Windermere and around 30 miles from Keswick.

The other lakes are all within an hour or two's travelling by car from the town, as are locations for walks and rambles, both gentle and demanding. The town is home to a fine selection of shopping arcades, can boast two castles, two museums, a host of historical buildings and bridges, fine restaurants, a multitude of public houses, and views that would please the most demanding photographer including the nearby ruin of Kendal Castle.

The pleasant Lakeland village of Underbarrow lies to the west of the town of Kendal and sits at the foot of Helsington Barrow, a limestone ridge rising to around 700 feet. Underbarrow stands at the centre of a network of roads linking Kendal to Crosthwaite in the Lyth Valley, Newby Bridge and Ulverston and the village of Crook to Levens making it idea to explore all the surrounding areas with ease.

Further west is the small village of Crosthwaite which is an ideal point from which to explore the Windermere and South Lakes area and, with walks right from the door, it will please keen walkers and hikers.
