Just a couple of miles east of the vast watery expanse of Lake Windermere lies the tiny hamlet of Crook, along the B5284 road to Kendal. From the comfort of a holiday cottage in Crook, visitors to the area can enjoy easy access to Windermere, Kendal, Brantwood and Coniston. With a population of around 350, Crook is a wild, windswept escape from the world, while in summer the lush green fields and rolling hills are the ideal place to hill walk, picnic and soak up the lovely views. At the heart of Crook's little community is St Catherine's church. This stout, grey, square-looking building was built in 1882 and is of `late perpendicular' style, which means no frills and no stained glass windows. Inside, however, the beautifully maintained interior and pews make for a perfect place to sit in silence for a while, whether you are religious or not. St Catherine's church contains a 14th century bell, which acts as a reminder of Crook's past and was once kept in the manor chapel of Crook Hall. What remains of the hall can be found just outside the village, with a tower dating back to 1620 still standing for all to see.
