Picturesque is perhaps an overused phrase in descriptions of the Lake District, but Langdale is one of the reasons why. Situated in the Great and Little Langdale valleys and home to the great Langdale Pikes, it offers some of the most stunning and breath-taking views of one of the most beautiful parts of the world. You don't even have to be on top of the Pikes or the close-by Helvellyn to experience this; the Lake District looks great from the ground too. Alfred Wainwright included the Langdale Pikes in his Pictorial Guide to the Central Fells and, of course, graced them with his much travelled walking boots on many occasions. As well as the superb fell walking locations available in all directions, Langdale boasts one of the most popular rock climbing spots around, namely, Gimmer Crag, which hangs beneath the 2,238ft peak of Loft Crag. You can row boats around Lake Coniston and ride horses in nearby Windermere. Grasmere and Ambleside are even closer. How much you see and do is your choice. You can walk long and high or short and flat around this Cumbrian countryside with the quaint escape of a Cumbrian cottage to come back to. Langdale is a real retreat for everybody. Wherever you are from and whatever you do, you will feel both at peace and welcome in this wonderful place.
