Just a 50-minute walk or five minute drive south of the tranquil shores of Derwent Water lies Rosthwaite, a tiny Cumbrian hamlet nestled between the fork of Stonethwaite Beck. Here's visitors will find a number of idyllic Cumbrian cottages available for that perfect Lake District getaway. While this little hamlet is surely a peaceful one, there's plenty of action to be had in the surrounding area. As is to be expected anywhere in the Lake District, there are several awe-inspiring walks to be had, especially between Seatoller and Keswick, Rosthwaite and Ennerdale Bridge. Walkers on the latter route will traverse Honister Hause, passing sleepy little Seatoller and on up to a slate factory, down past Ennerdale forest before finishing at Ennerdale Bridge. For a little more action than a good old-fashioned Lake District walk, visitors can try anything from hang gliding to windsurfing, rock climbing to abseiling. The area is abundant in diverse and challenging rock formations, fells and waterways, and is therefore perfect for virtually any outdoor pursuit you care to think of. The area abounds in history, too. Popular with romantic and artistic types, the Lake District attracts visitors from all over who come to explore what inspired the likes of Wordsworth, Coleridge and Southley (the 'Lake Poets'), Beatrix Potter and John Ruskin. Numerous towns all over the Lakes can lay claim to some part of the heritage, with Keswick paying homage to these writers and artists by showcasing some of their original hand-penned manuscripts in its museum, while Cockermouth has opened William Wordsworth's birthplace to his adoring public.
