Once upon a time, you would have gone to Haverthwaite if you needed gunpowder. Nowadays, you go there for peace and quiet! Just a few minutes down the A590 from Backbarrow, four miles north of Cartmel, Haverthwaite has moved on from its days as an iron, steel, cotton and gunpowder-producing village to become a more tranquil getaway for people who can arrive their either by car, on foot, or on the famous Lakeside and Haverthwaite Steam Railway. Running along the line that once transported gunpowder to the dockyards, the railway now carries tourists along the scenic route in traditional heritage steam trains. Many of the old industrial buildings have been converted into flats or houses, while a number of beautiful holiday cottages in Haverthwaite have sprung up over the years to accommodate the large number of tourists who arrive in the village each year. The village's history lives on in in buildings like the old Gunpowder Works, with its ornate clock tower, and St Anne's Church, which was built in 1824. A true taste of local life can be found at the Anglers Arms pub, which specialises in real ales, as well as putting on live music and quiz nights
