Description

Backbarrow, 1 1/2 miles from the south of lake Windermere, was home to the Backbarrow Ironworks who produced domestic iron goods such as kettles and box irons but were also renowned for the manufacture of cannons and other armaments. The days of industry are long gone and Backbarrow is now a super village visited by holidaymakers exploring the nearby Haverthwaite Railway which is within walking distance of the cottage on the A590 and offers special events such as Pensioner, Thomas, Diesel and Santa weekends. Another nearby attraction is ’The Lakeland motor museum’ recently opened and within walking distance of the property. Furness Wildlife Park is nearby for an enjoyable day out. The property is situated in an area that is accessible to all areas of the National Park by either car or public transport. Ben’s Row Cottage is in a quiet position in Brow Edge and has been lovingly restored and furnished to create a super holiday home. Flat screen TV’s and large American style fridge dictate the contemporary and quality style throughout the interior whilst the enclosed garden with decked area continues the theme outside.

About the local area

Offering stunning views of the South Lakeland District fells and countryside, Cartmel is easily accessible, with its winding streets, pretty cottages, whitewashed houses and medieval buildings leading to the village square. The village offers visitors many modern surprises in the form of fine quality attractions, shops, and eateries.

Around the village square you will discover a delightful assortment of genuine 16th - 18th century buildings providing, as they have for centuries, friendly inns, well stocked shops and private dwellings. It is also home to Britain's smallest National Hunt racecourse and the National Trust attraction of Cartmel Priory Gatehouse, a historically important building situated in the heart of the village.

Occupying one of the most attractive spots in the area, Grange-over-Sands looks out across the expansive sands of Morecambe Bay, a rich feeding ground for many species of birds that take advantage of the great climate in the area. It is easily accessible from the Lake District (Lake Windermere is only seven miles away) and towns such as Kendal are also just a short drive from here.

There is much to do and see on the Peninsular from golf , horse riding and fishing to hot air ballooning and parachuting! There also a good number of great walks, plus many places of historical interest.
